Treasure Island is expanding a tradition started at local schools and bringing it to the beach for the unofficial start of summer!

Treasure Island Fire Rescue will host their second annual Walk to Beach Day Friday, May 24, from 10 a.m. to 12 noon along Gulf Blvd between 104th and 108th Avenue.

“Whether you’re a resident or just visiting the area, everyone is welcome to come out and enjoy a morning of promoting safety and community,” a statement from the city said.

Inspired by the success of “Walk to School Day,” this event aims to promote community, health, environment, and benefits by spreading awareness about bicycle and pedestrian safety on the beach and beyond. The event will feature five stations along Gulf Blvd, with volunteers stationed at each crosswalk between 104th and 108th Avenue. Volunteers will be equipped with safety reflective vests and flags to help pedestrians cross the street safely. Volunteers will also provide education on the importance of using crosswalks and the need for drivers and pedestrians to be alert and aware.

The island town’s Fire-Rescue service has also inspired a similar event to be held by St. Pete Fire-Rescue in their beach area.
